Previewing Beavers’ 2021 Football Season
Oregon State looks to continue Idaho’s misery against Power 5 opponents.
By Nick Daschel
Continuing previews of Oregon State’s 2021 football schedule, this one focusing on the Beavers’lone FCS opponent, Idaho, at 12:30 p.m., Sept. 18th, in Reser Stadium:
Coach: Paul Petrino (ninth year, 30-59) -- 2020 record: 2-4
Key returnees: WR Hayden Hatten (43 catches, 613 yards, 3 TD), WR Cutrell Haywood (30-2742 TD), LB Tre Walker (54 tackles, 4½ for loss), CB Jaxon Woodward (2 interceptions), P CadeCoffey (second-team All America), FB Logan Kendall (first-team Big Sky).
Key losses: LB Christian Elliss
OSU v. Idaho previously: The Beavers are 33-7 all-time against Idaho. The Northwest schoolshaven’t played much in recent years, just twice since 1985. The last time they played was 2006,when OSU thumped the Vandals 38-0 in Reser. Since 1952, the Beavers have won 16 of 17against Idaho, losing only in 1984.
What’s to like about Idaho: Hard to get a good read on Idaho as the Vandals, like many in FCSbecause of COVID-19, played their 2020 season in the spring of 2021. Idaho played a six-gameschedule, beating Eastern Washington and Southern Utah. Even in defeat, the Vandals werecompetitive, as they were within one score late in all four losses. Idaho started the season witha win over Eastern Washington, an FCS playoff team, before struggling with injuries and COVID.At this stage, it’s anyone’s guess who plays quarterback for Idaho in 2021. The Vandals wentthrough four quarterbacks in six games. A converted running back, Zach Borisch, ran for 205yards playing quarterback in the season finale. Whoever plays quarterback is sure to find acomfortable target in first-team Big Sky receiver Hayden Hatten, who averaged more than 100receiving yards per game. The defense is led by linebacker Tre Walker, who averaged nearly 14tackles a game and was a finalist for FCS national defensive player of the year.
How we see it: Under Petrino, Idaho’s non-conference games against Power 5 opponents havebeen unwatchable. The Vandals are 0-5 in those games, losing by scores of 79-7, 59-14, 56-6,59-9 and 42-0. That doesn’t even count a 79-13 loss to Fresno State. In stating the obvious, thisis as close as it gets for Oregon State and a guaranteed win Saturday. Under Smith, OSU hasdominated its two previous FCS opponents, beating Southern Utah 48-25 in 2018 and Cal Poly45-7 in 2019. Whether Oregon State is 2-0, 1-1 or 0-2 heading into this game, we don’t expectthe Beavers to let up on the gas.
Score prediction: Oregon State 52, Idaho 13
