Idaho Assistant Takes Carroll College Helm

Staff Report

MOSCOW - Idaho football special teams and tight ends coach Troy Purcell has been named head coach for his alma mater, Carroll College of Helena, Mont., where he played from 1986-90 alongside Paul Petrino and under storied Saints coach Bob Petrino Sr.

The school announced the hire Friday. Purcell, who will become Carroll's 21st coach, will replace Mike Van Diest, who retired after 20 years as skipper and six NAIA national championships.

"There's a great tradition at Carroll College academically and athletically," Purcell said. "Being able to follow up behind two legendary coaches in Bob Petrino and Mike Van Diest is very exciting. I'm ready to continue that tradition of excellence."

Purcell, a Helena native, was an assistant at Idaho for the last three seasons - he coached linebackers in 2016, tight ends in '17, and coordinated the special teams in '18 (while also retaining tight-end duties).

This season, The Vandal's special teams ranked in the upper echelons of the Big Sky and FCS in several categories, including net punting, punt return average and kicks blocked.

"I'm very happy for Troy. He's going to do a great job," said Idaho head coach Paul Petrino, quoted in a news release. "He has an excellent mind on both sides of the ball. ... He's high energy and a proven winner. He's got ties all over Montana. Former Saint. Former player. He'll do well at Carroll College."

Purcell began his coaching career in the Montana prep scene, where he led Havre High School to a '04 championship, and logged three titles with Bozeman High School between 2005-16.
